My relationship with visual media began long before I started producing my own films. After my first record Junebug came out in 2000, I started placing those songs through sync licensing and custom scoring, including a two-year publishing deal with Lionsgate Entertainment. I was also co-founder and Creative Director of Pollen Music Group for 12 years, creating music for film, television, advertising and other visual media. That work taught me how powerfully music and image can work together in story-telling. Writing the song for (the oscar-nominated) Pearl became an important turning point because it shifted my perspective from simply placing music in someone else’s visual story to wanting to create those worlds myself. I also worked on the music for Trash Truck a beloved Netflix children’s show about a boy and his best friend, a trash truck!
I no longer see songwriting, film and visual storytelling as separate disciplines. A song can open a door into a character, place or memory; film gives me another language for exploring those things. I’m interested in the intersection of personal stories with history, place and community. Music was my first language, but film has expanded the vocabulary.
Lupine
An animated short about friendship, resilience, and forgiveness
Lupine follows a sensitive young girl who is devastated when her childhood friend leaves her behind. Across three stages of her life, she searches for acceptance and ultimately discovers that forgiveness does not always require reconciliation.
Created by animation director Heather Langley and musician and filmmaker Alexis Harte, Lupine is a digitally hand-drawn animated film exploring grief, compassion, and our ability to grow beyond the relationships that shape us.
The film is currently in production. Visit the official project page to learn more and find out how you can help bring Lupine to completion.
