Alexis Harte - Big Red Sun

Mayflies

© 2009 alexis harte

from their roofs they watch over milky seas
but their handsome sailors are long asleep
flowers strewn by the side of the road
moss covers the old man's stone in time

strangers on each side of the room
once a bride and once a groom
so tied up tight, so safely moored
across the ocean of a living room floor

it's a big red sun itching to explode
to take us all in her fiery fold
to take us all back home

come into the world of blue and green
in a black suit you leave the scene
slip into the ground to try it again
green grass grows right over your head
green grass grows right over your head

we were mayflies on a one-day ride
lost on a summer night
we came with a wave and a sigh
and never were slaves to the time

20 years ago, a wedding day
now they sit in silence in a television haze soon they'll rest their heads in beds of loam for
the leaves aren't falling, so much as drifting home

it's a big red sun itching to explode
to take us all in her fiery fold
to take us all back home
come into the world of blue and green
in a black suit you leave the scene
slip into the ground to try it again
green grass grows right over your head
green grass grows right over your head
